Finished Object for Friday

Here is my last finished project for January 2008.


The yarn is Mountain Colors Bearfoot in the "Glacier Teal" colorway, purchased at Knitorious. It was my first time working with this yarn, & I enjoyed it so much that I have a couple other sets of Bearfoot socks going at the moment.



These are a gift, but I really like the yarn & the colors so I bought myself another skein to make myself a pair sometime later on.


This sock is also Mountain Colors Bearfoot, but for myself this time. The colorway is "Ruby River" which I think describes it well. I started this pair at Christmas time because the color just seemed to fit with that time of the year. Perhaps I'll finish them in time for Valentine's Day.

As you can see out the window, we've had snow here in Midwestern USA. The squirrels were out finding their nuts during a break in the storm, & I caught a picture of one out the window before my cats jumped up by the window & scared it away.

My kids are hoping for a Snow Day off school on Friday. However, I'm not expecting my employer to close for the day, so I'd just as soon school was still on for tomorrow. Their school hasn't posted anything yet, so we'll see. (Not that I'd mind the extra knitting time if my employer does happen to close due to weather.)

Saturday Sky & a Tale of KIP

Here is what the sky looked like in the St. Louis area this morning.




To go along with the pretty sky picture this week, I also have a different-from-normal tale to share regarding a conversation sparked by Knitting In Public.

Yesterday I was doing my usual KIP knitting-while-waiting-in-line thing as I was buying groceries at Sam's Club. A guy that was working there came up & asked me if I was making a sock.

*Blink, Blink*

"Well, Yes, it is a sock." (I'm not sure how I kept from adding, "However did you know?" Perhaps due to the surprise factor.)

I was pretty shocked that he recognized what it was, since all I had done was the cuff & an inch of stockinette.



Turns out his wife is a knitter, & also prefers metal DPNs for socks, just like I do. We talked for a couple minutes. It was cool to run into someone who wasn't actually a knitter but still recognized what I was doing.


The sock I was working on is one of my sets of "Santa Socks." Santa brought me this Kaffe Fassett Regia yarn in my stocking this past Christmas. Doesn't Santa know me well?

Saturday Sky, January 19th, 2008

Saturday's sky yesterday was the basic chilly & cloudless January sky -- plain, pale ice-blue.




It was a good day to stay inside & knit. I finally made myself jump the hurdle of colorwork on DPNs.
Now the sleeves of my daughter's sweater have some chance of actually being finished this winter.




I have both sleeves knit far enough to be worked on regular circulars now, although I only got a picture of one sleeve's progress before the natural light was gone yesterday.

Good Thing I Didn't Make Any Resolutions...

Because they'd already be broken if I had.

Last Sunday I went to the Open House/Carnival Kick-Off event at Knitorious. It was a lot of fun. I met up with Mary Beth & a couple of my other Knitting Mama friends. Rachel captured the spirit of the event very well here, so I'll won't try to re-invent the wheel. I do want to share this picture that Rachel took for me, though.

It's visible proof that I completely forgot the theme when I was getting ready to leave the house that morning, as I didn't have any purple, green, or gold on. Oh, well. I had a great time anyway. That's Rachel's camera in my hands. We traded cameras temporarily & couldn't resist reciprocal picture taking.




Here's proof of a different sort. It shows I can't resist pretty wool when it's waived under my nose right as I walk in the door, & also proof of cast-on-itis & my inability to stay away from knitting on small needles.

Saturday Sky, January 12th, 2008

The sky is pretty this morning, & I even managed to get a picture on my blog in a timely fashion. (Just don't hold your breath expecting this to happen every Saturday this year.)

What's Off My Needles Wednesday

For Wednesday of this week, I have items OFF my needles!



I finished a hat for each of my kids this week. Two Jolly Roger hats inspired by the We Call Them Pirates chart on Helloyarn.com & a hat with hearts & flowers for my daughter. (A 7 year old little girl didn't want a Jolly Roger. Imagine that.)




I also finally Kitchnered the toes & removed all needles from my Friendship Socks. I finished the knitting before Christmas, but didn't want to try doing Kitchner stitch while I was all stressed out from holiday preparations. I saved them for my "Hurrah, we've gotten the tree down & packed away" reward.

Sunrise Sky

This is from a Friday morning, rather than Saturday, but I thought it was the best one for the first sky picture of 2008

The Year of The Socks

It's time for a knitting project completion review for 2007.

My blog output was erratic, I didn't manage to keep up with my photo blogging, & my stash diet was completely blown.

However, the Finished Object count is fairly respectable:

1 charity hat for the Knitter's Guild
2 pairs of baby booties for friends' baby girls.
3 sets of fingerless gloves for my kids.
4 scarves of my own design given as gifts.
And a full baker's dozen of sock pairs -- not bad for someone who had never knit socks before last spring.

If anyone had told me on New Years Day 2007 that I would finish 13 pairs of socks, but no shawls or sweaters for the year, I would have told them they were crazy. It just goes to show, never say never.
